Head of Engineering

Founded in 2019, Uncapped is a fintech company focused on providing working capital to SMEs in North America and Europe. They leverage multiple data sources to make credit decisions faster, safer and more conveniently, working with large platforms including Amazon and Walmart.

Experience & Technical Skills:

• 10+ years in engineering roles with at least 3 years leading engineering managers in high-growth environments.
• Proven track record delivering complex, distributed systems in production; fintech, marketplace, or data-intensive domains preferred.
• Deep fluency with GCP, Kubernetes, BigQuery, and event-driven architectures.
• Strong understanding of API integrations, automated data pipelines, and infrastructure tradeoffs at scale.
• Active, hands-on user of AI development tooling with experience scaling adoption across a team.

Strategic & Commercial Capabilities:

• Ability to balance immediate delivery pressure with long-term architectural health and communicate clearly upward.
• Commercial acumen to assess engineering cost versus business value.
• Experience in regulated or compliance-sensitive environments is a strong plus.
• Low tolerance for ambiguous ownership, process theatre, and information silos; builds systems to eliminate them.

Lead Engineering Strategy & Team:

• Build and develop a high-performing engineering organisation of 15+ engineers and engineering managers.
• Strengthen culture, processes, and communication discipline for autonomous, high-quality delivery across distributed EU/UK/US timezones.
• Own engineering career frameworks, manager development, and the hiring bar.

Own Technical Architecture:

• Partner with the CTO to set and enforce technical direction across the full platform stack.
• Lead architecture reviews and own governance frameworks.
• Make build/buy/integrate decisions, especially for underwriting automation and new marketplace data partners.
• Identify structural fragility before it becomes operational risk.

Drive AI-Powered Productivity:

• Lead adoption of AI tooling across the development lifecycle including code generation, testing, documentation, and incident response.
• Set expectations, track impact, and normalize AI usage across the team.

Enforce Engineering Discipline:

• Own delivery cadences, planning hygiene, cross-squad coordination, and accountability structures.
• Build processes to keep the team aligned without bureaucracy.
• Establish and maintain clear ownership boundaries across squads.

Enable Cross-functional Impact:

• Partner with Risk, Product, and Operations to ensure engineering output translates into business outcomes.
• Assess cost and feasibility of new technical initiatives and communicate tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders.
