Staff Software Engineer, Back-end (Identity Engineering)

Identity International is a newly established team created to accelerate Affirm’s international expansion - one of the company’s top priorities. The team focuses on building and expanding Identity Data Management, Verification, and Decisioning capabilities for Europe, integrating third-party KYC vendors, and ensuring alignment with global platform and operational standards.

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
• Extensive experience developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to support effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
• Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating existing functionality through technical and execution plans.
• Ability to write high quality, maintainable code.

• Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale and align it with business-impacting projects.
• Collaborate across teams in the product development lifecycle with product management, design, and analytics to manage technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs.
• Act as a force-multiplier by defining and advocating technical solutions and operational processes.
• Take ownership of team operations and availability by ensuring monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting are in place to support "keep the lights on" and on-call efforts.
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards and advocating for them beyond the team through writing and tech talks.
• Develop talent on the team by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example.
• Design, develop, and launch backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
• Develop highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
• Deliver major features, system components, or deprecate existing functionality through technical and execution plans.
• Write high quality code that is easily understood and used by others.
