Kotlin Desktop Engineer – AI Inference Tooling (Senior/Staff)

VirtusLab is a leading European software consulting and engineering company with over 350 EU-based professionals. The company focuses on crafting clean code and practical solutions with precision and purpose. The role is within a small, startup-like team building a desktop tool for local AI inference, working on a project called Local Inference Platform, which is currently an internal MVP and planned to be open source.

• Strong Kotlin skills
• Genuine interest in Compose Desktop as a UI framework
• Understanding of asynchronous and concurrent programming with Kotlin Coroutines
• Awareness of cross-platform differences (file paths, OS-specific packaging)
• Engineering pragmatism to reduce complexity while keeping system extensible
• System-level thinking about UI, backend APIs, agent configs, and proxy layers
• Hands-on experience using LLMs daily with good judgment
• Fluency in English with good communication skills for remote work
• Self-motivation and ability to take full ownership of features end-to-end

Nice to have:

• Experience with different LLM agents and their configurations
• Experience with mitmproxy or similar HTTP traffic inspection tools
• Experience with LLM proxy layers such as LiteLLM or Openrouter
• Experience creating and signing OS installers (MSI, DEB, DMG)

• Build the UI using Compose Desktop
• Integrate with backend REST APIs for model deployment management
• Set up agent configurations through TOML/JSON/YAML files
• Work on LLM proxy routing
• Create installers for Windows (MSI), macOS (DMG), and Linux (DEB)
• Collaborate in a small team with direct contact with potential users
• Participate in code reviews
