Java Tech Lead (m/w/d) Mobility Startup

GETAWAY GmbH develops and operates an end-to-end platform for car sharing and vehicle rental used in Germany, Austria, and Spain. The platform includes mobile apps, web applications, back-office tools, and integrations with telematics hardware, payment service providers, and KYC providers from a single modular codebase. The backend is based on Java 17 / Jakarta EE 10 Payara, and the frontend uses React / React Native.

• Several years of backend development experience with Java (Jakarta EE / Java EE / Spring) in production
• Strong experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and software craftsmanship
• Proven experience as Tech Lead or Senior Engineer with team responsibility
• Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS (EC2, ECS, CloudWatch, S3)
• Experience with MongoDB or comparable NoSQL databases in production
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines such as GitLab CI or GitHub Actions
• Hands-on mentality with ability to deliver value immediately

Nice to have:

• Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or CloudFormation)
• Experience with React and/or React Native frontend
• Understanding of mobility, car-sharing, or vehicle rental domains
• Experience in regulated environments or GDPR compliance
• Knowledge of telematics hardware integrations or IoT systems
• Class B driving licence

Technical Leadership & Architecture:

• Further development and maintenance of the modular Java / Jakarta EE platform with shared architectural decision responsibility
• Implement infrastructure improvements including IaC Terraform / CloudFormation, multi-region setup, and disaster recovery
• Implement outstanding security measures
• Drive migration of binary data from MongoDB to S3 and reduce technical debt
• Evaluate and develop CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI) and test coverage

Processes & Team Organization:

• Establish formal code review processes and consistent planning cycles
• Collaborate with CTO on gradual handover of engineering and operational responsibilities
• Support building a product management process aligned with customer requirements
• Mentor junior frontend developer and support senior engineers

Operations & Quality:

• Share responsibility for monitoring, alerting, and incident response using AWS CloudWatch, Sentry, Crashlytics
• Automate dependency vulnerability scanning within CI pipeline
• Provide technical support for customer projects from onboarding to troubleshooting
