Data Platform Software Engineering Principal, State Street Investment Management, Vice President

• 12+ years of software engineering experience delivering large-scale, distributed systems.
• BS/MS in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Strong object-oriented design skills including design patterns, SOLID principles, and modern engineering best practices.
• Proficiency in Java (preferred) and/or Python for building scalable, high-performance services.
• Experience designing, building, and operating microservices and APIs (REST, RPC, gRPC, OpenAPI) with backward compatibility and resilience.
• Hands-on cloud-native experience on AWS and/or Azure integrating with Snowflake and Databricks.
• Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools including Terraform, CloudFormation, or Bicep.
• Experience building event-driven systems using messaging/streaming platforms (Kafka, Kinesis, Event Hubs, Flink).
• Observability and production operations experience including logging, metrics, tracing (OpenTelemetry/Prometheus/Grafana), on-call, and incident response.
• Strong SDLC execution capabilities: CI/CD, automated testing, secure-by-default development, and production support.
• Strong communication and leadership skills, including coaching and collaborating with engineering and business stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience delivering AI-assisted SDLC initiatives (e.g., Copilot/Claude Code) with secure usage and measurable improvements.
• Experience building internal developer agents/automations for integration and engineering operations with human-in-the-loop workflows.
• Familiarity with AI governance in regulated environments and operationalizing AI engineering tools within CI/CD workflows.

Additional requirements:

• Position requires office presence at least 3 days per week.

• Hands-on design and delivery of core backend services including APIs, microservices, orchestration/workflow, and metadata/access services with production code responsibility.
• Architect large-scale, distributed components on AWS/Azure ensuring low latency, resiliency, scalability, and clear service boundaries.
• Own software operations including on-call duties, incident response, backfills, post-incident reviews, and reliability improvements.
• Build and operate migration frameworks/utilities for Snowflake and Databricks workloads with validation, observability, rollback, and replay capabilities.
• Engineer security-by-design for services including authentication/authorization, secrets management, encryption/KMS, network controls, and audit-ready logging integration.
• Design and deliver low-latency, event-driven integration patterns with replay, idempotency, schema management, and failure handling.
• Develop internal tools and developer experience enablers such as admin/onboarding tools, diagnostics dashboards, SDKs/CLIs, client libraries, and templates.
• Lead agile delivery including standups, sprint planning, backlog refinement, retrospectives, and continuous engineering practice improvements.
• Set engineering direction and standards for platform services, collaborating with Data Engineering and Analytics leaders.
• Build and lead a software engineering pod including hiring, coaching, development, and performance management.
