Software Engineer 5— Platform Modernization Engineering

Netflix is a leading entertainment service with over 300 million paid memberships in over 190 countries. The Platform Modernization Engineering (PME) — Migrations team accelerates Netflix's infrastructure evolution by driving safe, scalable migrations across the stack, reducing engineering toil, eliminating technical debt, and enabling faster feature delivery, innovation, and security protection. The team operates in pods with 3–6 month cycles, partnering with critical Infrastructure Engineering initiatives to build automation and tooling, including AI-assisted code modification pipelines and fleet-wide orchestration systems.

• Strong backend engineering skills with experience building and operating production services at scale (experience in Java or Python is a plus).
• Experience navigating and operating within large, complex infrastructure ecosystems.
• Deep, hands-on experience building AI-driven solutions.
• Proven ability to lead complex, cross-functional technical projects from design through completion.
• Strong technical writing skills including design documents, tradeoff analyses, and postmortems.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS: EC2, S3, EKS/Kubernetes).
• Ability to navigate ambiguity, influence without authority, and partner effectively with senior stakeholders.

Nice to have:

• Experience with large-scale code migration or modernization campaigns.
• Experience integrating LLMs and AI agents into engineering workflows and shipping AI-powered solutions.
• Experience building or operating fleet-management, dependency graph, or service catalog systems.
• Background in platform or infrastructure engineering organizations.
• Familiarity with Java or Python in backend services context.
• Experience designing campaigns with measurable adoption and adherence metrics.

Migration Engineering:

• Design and execute large-scale code and infrastructure migration campaigns across thousands of repositories and services.
• Own the full lifecycle: scoping, campaign design, automated execution, validation, and completion.

Automation & Tooling:

• Build and extend internal automation platforms using AI-assisted code modification, rule-based transformations, and batch orchestration.

Technical Design:

• Write clear, well-researched design documents.
• Identify and communicate tradeoffs between migration approaches and drive decisions with data and stakeholder input.

Cross-Functional Partnership:

• Collaborate with partner teams on infrastructure initiatives to understand migration needs, de-risk execution, and ensure successful campaign delivery.

Paved Path Advocacy:

• Identify opportunities to improve Paved Path adoption and adherence.
• Influence product strategy and roadmaps through direct engagement and data.

Operational Excellence:

• Instrument migrations with telemetry and dashboards.
• Monitor fleet health and track adoption rates.
• Build feedback loops to improve campaign design and execution.
