Remote Head of Design

garden3d is a worker-owned collective with four studios and an open P&L model, working across various brands including Sanctuary Computer, XXIX, Index Space, USB Club, and the garden3d umbrella itself.

• 10+ years in design with at least 3 years leading a team in a studio, agency, or founder-led company.
• A portfolio demonstrating exceptional visual, typographic, and narrative taste.
• Expertise in type design and editorial design as core crafts.
• Extensive experience presenting and defending work before blue-chip clients across various industries.
• Proven track record of winning new business through pitching, scoping, and closing deals.
• Experience hiring and mentoring designers who improve measurably.
• Ability to run critiques with specific, honest, and actionable feedback.
• Hands-on fluency in Figma, able to create design work directly.
• Skilled at case study production including interviewing, storytelling, and art direction.

Nice to have:

• Experience directing video production and editorial quality control.
• Skills in motion design, photography, or editing.
• Experience in print, publishing, or book design.
• Product and interface design experience alongside brand work.
• Managing company web presence end to end.
• Ability to manage multiple brand voices within a house of brands.
• Experience working in worker-owned, open-book, or unusual company structures.
• Established network in the design community including schools, conferences, and talent.
• Experience designing for design and engineering decision-makers at large companies.

The Head of Design Role:

• Set craft standards for all garden3d brands ensuring every output scores 8 out of 10 or higher.
• Run regular design critiques providing specific, honest, and actionable feedback.
• Build and maintain a studio culture around critique and high-quality design.
• Collaborate closely with founders, studio leads, designers, developers, editors, animators, photographers, and clients across all garden3d verticals.
• Manage and elevate design work across brand identity, product interfaces, case studies, and launch films.
• Recruit, hire, and develop exceptional design talent.
• Maintain consistent quality and standards across all studios under the garden3d collective.

The role is fully remote and open to candidates based anywhere worldwide. Initial employment is a trial contract paid hourly. Hiring is contingent on defining and meeting success goals during the trial period.
