Infrastructure Engineer

Focal Systems is a Silicon Valley-based startup specializing in retail AI solutions with a tech hub in Poland. The company focuses on automating and optimizing brick-and-mortar retail using deep learning computer vision and operates globally across multiple countries.

• 5+ years of experience in infrastructure, platform, or DevOps engineering.
• Production experience with GCP at scale.
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Helm, Docker in production environments.
• Strong proficiency in Python with software development background.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code using Terraform.
• Knowledge of observability tools like Prometheus for metrics, alerting, and instrumentation.
• Solid fundamentals in CI/CD and deployment strategies including blue/green, canary, and feature flags.

Nice to have:

• Operational knowledge and query tuning with MySQL.
• Experience with MongoDB, Kafka (or comparable streaming platforms), and CircleCI.
• Experience with data-intensive applications and microservices at scale.
• Comfortable coordinating across global teams and handling shared on-call rotations.
• Advanced written and spoken English skills.

• Work on the design, operation, and continuous improvement of core infrastructure, including cloud, data pipelines, deployments, and observability.
• Drive meaningful reductions in costs of goods sold (COGS) and latency while maintaining reliability.
• Architect and maintain scalable backend infrastructure built on Python, FastAPI, Kafka, Docker, and cloud platforms.
• Build and operate deployment pipelines supporting blue/green and canary deployments, CI/CD tooling, and zero-downtime release processes.
• Design and implement monitoring and alerting systems for system health visibility across geographies.
• Create tooling for transparent, easy access to data across different locations and formats.
• Collaborate closely with backend, deep learning, and embedded engineering teams to evolve the infrastructure alongside product and model requirements.
