Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Card)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without hidden fees or compounding interest. The company is reinventing credit cards entirely, working with card issuers to create new types of cards with straightforward, flexible terms. The role is for the lead engineer for EU teams, collaborating with teams in Spain and Poland to revolutionize payments.

• 8+ years total experience as a software engineer.
• Proficiency in designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale with technologies like Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Proficiency in developing frontend applications.
• Experience delivering major features or system components with a technical and execution plan.
• Ability to write high-quality, understandable code.
• Comfortable working from low-level language details to large system architecture.
• Demonstrated growth and impact with iteration on engineering and cross-functional feedback.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.

• Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale and align it with business-impacting projects.
• Lead software engineering for all card products in the EU.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risk management, and understanding of trade-offs.
• Act as a force-multiplier by defining and advocating technical solutions and operational processes.
• Own team operations and availability, including monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting.
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, and promoting them beyond the team.
• Develop talent by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example.
