Engineering Manager - Backend (Transcend)

Transcend Retail Solutions, a subsidiary of Tesco, offers cutting-edge technology for retailers worldwide, powering Tesco’s $8bn online grocery business. Operating as a startup within an enterprise, it combines agility and innovation backed by a global retail leader. The role is based in Kraków with hybrid work (3 days office, 2 days remote).

• Proven experience managing software engineering teams (~8 people)
• 6+ years hands-on software development experience
• Strong understanding of Agile methodologies (Scrum or Kanban)
• Fluent English with excellent communication skills
• Experience in high-scale environments (e.g., e-commerce, millions of API calls)
• Practical experience with cloud platforms (Azure or similar)
• Strong system design and architecture skills
• Track record of owning projects end-to-end and providing technical leadership
• Experience mentoring and developing engineers
• Proactive, value-driven mindset with strong problem-solving abilities
• Ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Comfortable working directly with customers and external partners
• Thrives in a fast-moving, startup-like environment where priorities shift quickly

• Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions
• Design secure, performant, and maintainable system architectures and APIs
• Guide the team in writing clean, efficient, and testable code
• Oversee testing and quality assurance to ensure reliability and performance
• Manage deployments, monitor system health, and optimize performance
• Provide production support and participate in on-call rotations
• Conduct regular 1:1s, coach team members, and support career development
• Build high-performing teams delivering value within tight timeframes
• Represent the team in cross-functional technical discussions
• Define and prioritize features for services owned by your team
• Continuously improve engineering practices and team processes
• Act as a bridge between engineering and external stakeholders to align technical solutions with customer expectations and business goals

This role requires you to be based in or near Kraków as you will spend 60% of your week (3 days) collaborating onsite and the rest remotely. Occasional travel and flexible working hours may be required to support different time zones. The employer is not open to hiring Ukrainians for this role.
