Software Engineer 5— Platform Modernization Engineering

The Platform Modernization Engineering (PME) — Migrations team accelerates Netflix's infrastructure evolution by driving safe, scalable migrations across the stack. The team reduces engineering toil, eliminates technical debt, and enables faster feature delivery, innovation, and security protection across Netflix's engineering platform. They operate in pods (3–6 month cycles) and build automation and tooling including AI-assisted code modification pipelines and fleet-wide orchestration systems.

• Strong backend engineering skills with experience building and operating production services at scale (experience in Java or Python preferred).
• Proven experience navigating complex infrastructure ecosystems and understanding service interdependencies.
• Deep, hands-on experience building AI-driven solutions.
• Ability to drive complex, cross-functional technical projects from design through completion.
• Strong technical writing skills including design docs, tradeoff analyses, and postmortems.
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS services such as EC2, S3, EKS, and Kubernetes.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity and influence effectively across teams and stakeholders.

Nice to have:

• Experience with large-scale code migration or modernization campaigns.
• Experience building or integrating large language models (LLMs) and AI agents into engineering workflows.
• Experience in platform or infrastructure engineering organizations.
• Familiarity with fleet-management, dependency graph, or service catalog systems.

• Design and execute large-scale code and infrastructure migration campaigns across Netflix's fleet.
• Own the full lifecycle: scoping, campaign design, automated execution, validation, and completion.
• Build and extend PME's internal automation platforms using AI-assisted code modification, rule-based transformations, and batch orchestration.
• Write clear design documents, identify tradeoffs, and drive decisions using data and stakeholder input.
• Embed with partner teams to understand migration needs, de-risk project execution, and ensure successful campaign delivery.
• Identify opportunities to improve Paved Path adoption, surface patterns, and influence product strategy.
• Instrument migrations with telemetry and dashboards for monitoring and continuous improvement.
