Senior Backend Engineer (Go), Tenant Scale: Gitaly

GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, trusted by more than 50 million registered users including over 50% of the Fortune 100. The role is within the Gitaly team, responsible for GitLab's Git data storage tier, providing reliable and fast access to Git repositories through APIs and storage operations, serving GitLab.com, self-managed customers, and GitLab Dedicated.

• Significant experience building, debugging, and optimizing distributed or highly available software systems in production.
• Experience owning complex projects end to end, including design, execution, rollout, and operational support.
• Strong systems design skills covering performance, failure modes, consistency, concurrency, capacity, and observability.
• Proven ability to influence technical decisions and work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
• Experience mentoring engineers and improving team practices, code quality, testing, and documentation.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for explaining complex concepts and trade-offs.
• Professional experience with Go or another backend or systems language.
• Experience operating production systems including incident response and durable improvements.
• Experience with Ruby, Git internals, gRPC, or Git server infrastructure is highly desirable.

• Own moderately sized to complex technical initiatives from problem definition through implementation and operational follow-through.
• Act as directly responsible individual, aligning stakeholders, communicating progress and trade-offs, and managing risks.
• Lead technical design for distributed storage, Git repository management, and scalability challenges with data-guided decisions.
• Collaborate with engineers and teams across GitLab to deliver cross-functional outcomes.
• Improve engineering practices via mentoring, documentation, knowledge sharing, design, and code reviews.
• Take operational ownership including incident response, post-incident improvements, capacity analysis, and escalations.
• Identify opportunities to improve workflows through automation, reusable designs, dashboards, and upstream contributions.
• Respond to user emergencies, platform alerts, support requests, including on-call duties.
