Staff AI Engineer - AI Infrastructure & Agentic Platform

ShiftKey is a platform disrupting healthcare staffing in the U.S., enabling direct connections between healthcare facilities and licensed professionals to mitigate staffing shortages. The company operates a healthcare workforce marketplace in a regulated (HIPAA) environment and is transitioning into an AI-native company.

• 7+ years professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in production AI/LLM systems.
• Expertise in retrieval engineering, including re-ranking, hybrid search, query transformation, and retrieval quality evaluation.
• Experience with agentic frameworks, multi-step reasoning loops, and model routing trade-offs.
• Proficiency in production-grade software engineering in Go, Python, or TypeScript.
• Hands-on experience with managed cloud AI platforms like AWS Bedrock or Azure AI Foundry.
• Proficient in Terraform for infrastructure provisioning.
• Familiarity with production observability including metrics and structured logging for AI workloads.
• Understanding of HIPAA-style data handling in regulated SaaS environments; healthcare experience is a plus.

• Evolve the AI knowledge platform, enhancing retrieval, indexing, and synthesis layers to support internal and customer workflows.
• Architect and operate agentic AI infrastructure on AWS with cost guardrails and observability.
• Design graph-based, relationship-aware retrieval for multi-hop queries across data sources.
• Collaborate with product engineering to define the AI platform API surface.
• Build reference agent implementations for operational-incident triage and customer support.
• Own the AI infrastructure cost model, monitoring and managing compute, model, and storage expenses.
