Senior Android BSP Engineer (Independent Contractor)

Jabil Inc. partners with experienced independent professionals contributing expertise to international engineering projects developing next-generation embedded Android/Linux platforms for advanced professional products deployed worldwide. The engineering team focuses on sophisticated control systems, digital media, and unified communications solutions used in environments such as conference rooms and enterprise settings.

• 8+ years of experience developing, customizing, and debugging embedded software/firmware for Linux and/or Android-based products.
• Strong programming skills in C/C++ within embedded or system-level development environments.
• Hands-on experience with Embedded Linux development on ARM-based platforms, including configuration, build, deployment, hardware interfaces, and platform bring-up.
• Experience with Linux Kernel, U-Boot, Device Tree, and low-level platform customization.
• Practical skills in device driver development, optimization, troubleshooting, and bug fixing for display, power management, Wi-Fi, GPIO, or other hardware interfaces.
• Hands-on experience with Android HAL and debugging across Android Framework and Linux Kernel layers.
• Good understanding of AOSP architecture and Android platform development workflows.
• Strong understanding of recent Android versions, preferably Android 14 or later.
• Experience with source control and Android development tools such as Git, Gerrit, GitHub, ADB, and Fastboot.
• Ability to debug embedded systems where traditional step debugging may be limited.
• Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and collaborate with hardware teams.
• Strong problem-solving skills, ownership mindset, and ability to work independently.
• Good written and verbal communication skills in English.

Nice to have:

• Experience with Android framework services, Android Native applications using JNI/NDK, or Android system applications in Java or Kotlin.
• Experience with hardware-accelerated graphics processing, especially OpenGL ES.
• Experience with Camera, Display, Media, power management, or connectivity subsystems in embedded Android/Linux products.
• Experience with scripting or automation using Bash or Python.
• Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field.

• Participate in the full software development lifecycle for embedded Android/Linux products, including design, development, testing, debugging, release support, and maintenance.
• Design, develop, and maintain embedded software and platform-level components using C++ and C in cooperation with software and hardware teams.
• Work with Embedded Linux and Android BSP areas, covering platform configuration, hardware interfaces, device drivers, and new device features.
• Contribute to next-generation control systems, digital media, and unified communications products.
• Investigate and resolve system-level issues across Android/Linux software layers, including troubleshooting, debugging, and performance improvements.
• Support integration between software applications, hardware components, and control systems to ensure stable product behavior.
• Handle field escalations for new and legacy products by analyzing issues and improving product reliability.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation such as test procedures, design notes, troubleshooting guides, and implementation details.
