Technical Lead – Power BI & dbt | Hands-on BI Development

Square One Resources is hiring a Technical Lead to join a highly technical Business Intelligence team focused on Power BI and dbt. The role involves hands-on BI development with technical leadership in a development-oriented capacity.

• Strong hands-on experience with Power BI, Power BI Service, and semantic models.
• Strong understanding of DAX and optimization of Power BI models and reports.
• Experience delivering and maintaining production-grade Power BI solutions.
• Knowledge of Power BI security, access management, and deployment practices.
• Ability to design well-structured semantic models and reporting solutions.
• Very good knowledge of SQL and practical experience with dbt.
• Hands-on experience with Snowflake or similar cloud data platforms.
• Strong understanding of dimensional data modeling, reusable data models, and shared KPI definitions.
• Understanding of centralized business logic design in the data layer.
• Ability to decide which logic resides in dbt/Snowflake versus Power BI.
• Proven ability to independently design and implement BI solutions.
• Experience with Git, code review, and CI/CD lifecycle.
• Practical experience with APIs and scripting (e.g., Python, PowerShell).
• Strong software engineering mindset and applying best practices to BI solutions.
• Experience with automation of development or deployment activities.

Nice to have:

• Experience automating Power BI deployments and working with Power BI/Microsoft Fabric APIs.
• Experience implementing automated tests for data, models, or BI solutions.
• Experience in media, telecommunications, OTT, or subscription-based products.
• Experience working in large-scale BI environments.
• Experience with modernization or transformation of analytical platforms.
• Experience establishing reusable BI frameworks, standards, or development accelerators.

• Design and develop Power BI semantic models, reports, dashboards, and BI solutions.
• Build data models in dbt and Snowflake, implementing business logic appropriately.
• Design and deliver end-to-end BI solutions from data layers to BI products.
• Optimize data models, SQL queries, semantic models, and Power BI reports.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical and production issues.
• Ensure solutions are scalable, maintainable, reusable, and aligned with architectural standards.
• Support developers with complex technical challenges.
• Review code, data models, semantic models, and technical solutions.
• Provide guidance on implementation approaches and technical decisions.
• Mentor developers and share knowledge within the team.
• Establish and improve development standards and best practices.
• Identify areas for simplification, optimization, refactoring, or architectural improvement.
• Act as a technical point of reference without formal people-management responsibilities.
• Automate repetitive activities related to development, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
• Use APIs, scripting, CI/CD, and AI-assisted development tools to enhance productivity.
• Develop repeatable and controlled processes for BI product delivery.
• Contribute to improving the development-to-production lifecycle.
• Promote reuse, standardization, and consistency across BI solutions.
• Adapt central solutions to local business needs without duplication.
• Collaborate with central Data and BI teams on technical and architectural challenges.
