Senior Software Engineer - Backend (Scala)

Sprout Social is an engineering-driven company based in Kraków, operating in scalable backend services. Their engineering team processes tens of billions of requests and asynchronous events daily, ingesting billions of social messages, shipping over 1,000 production deployments monthly.

• At least 4 years developing and supporting software in production
• Minimum 3 years programming in object-oriented languages like Scala or other JVM languages
• At least 3 years experience with functional programming paradigms and ecosystems such as Scala Cats and ZIO
• Professional English proficiency (verbal and written)
• Located in or near Kraków with occasional office availability

Nice to have:

• 3 years experience developing and supporting scalable, distributed backend services
• 3 years experience working with SQL and relational databases
• Professional Polish proficiency

• Build, scale, ship, and monitor platform components using Scala, Python, MySQL, Clickhouse, Redis, Kafka, Qdrant, and Solr
• Partner with product managers, designers, and engineers to define requirements and complete features
• Improve processes, systems, and tools to deliver quality products
• Maintain project quality and planning by meeting deadlines, breaking down work, and ensuring testing and monitoring
• Mentor engineers through knowledge sharing and feedback on pull requests and technical designs

Within 1 month:

• Complete onboarding covering company mission, products, and engineering approach
• Plan initial priorities and career goals with manager
• Learn code deployment processes
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams
• Receive and give code reviews
• Ship first code changes with mentoring

Within 3 months:

• Focus on code quality and test coverage
• Understand team roadmap and Agile processes
• Participate in retrospectives and continuous improvement
• Build connections across teams
• Attend technical design meetings
• Maintain systems handling hundreds of thousands of daily messages
• Attend presentations, workshops, and training sessions

Within 6 months:

• Independently own and deliver features
• Collaborate on quarterly team goals
• Contribute to MVP definitions
• Participate in performance conversations and professional growth

Within 12 months:

• Deliver small-to-medium features on time from implementation to delivery
• Integrate monitoring and alerting tools
• Participate in architecture discussions
• Understand trade-offs in engineering solutions
• Contribute to technical initiatives for system health
• Keep frameworks and dependencies up to date
