Senior Backend Engineer - Bookings

At SumUp, they empower small businesses worldwide by providing simple and affordable business tools for payments, finance, and customer relationships. The role is within the Sell Online Tribe, focusing on Online Store and Bookings products that enable merchants to manage appointments, showcase offerings, and receive payments via mobile devices.

• 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience
• Fluency in Kotlin (or Java) with deep experience in Spring Boot
• Experience with PostgreSQL, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS
• Understanding of RESTful APIs, distributed systems, and event-driven architectures (e.g. CQRS, Event Sourcing)
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and GitHub Actions
• Familiarity with observability tools like Grafana or Honeycomb
• Collaborative team player who mentors peers and focuses on delivering value to merchants

Nice to have:

• Familiarity with gRPC, Protobuf, or backend/database performance optimisation

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems supporting SumUp’s Bookings product
• Collaborate with frontend and mobile engineers to deliver new features and improve APIs across web, iOS, and Android
• Participate in technical planning, code reviews, and design discussions to ensure clean, testable, and maintainable code
• Continuously optimise performance, ensure observability, and uphold high reliability standards
• Actively contribute to shaping the technical roadmap for the Sell Online platform
