Senior Software Engineer - Backend (Store Rollout & Observability)

Tesco Technology develops and operates a robust, distributed deployment system as part of the Retail Platform that supports large-scale, low-bandwidth environments. The team manages software rollouts across thousands of retail stores using cloud-native and edge-based solutions, aiming to enhance deployment workflows and platform reliability.

• 6+ years of software engineering experience.
• Strong Java development skills including Spring Framework.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven mindset.
• Basic system design skills.
• Deep understanding of metrics, logs, traces, alerting strategies, and performance monitoring.
• Experience with observability frameworks and standards such as OpenTelemetry.
• Knowledge of event-driven systems and event sourcing patterns.
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.

Nice to Have:

• Familiarity with SQL databases and distributed systems concepts.
• Knowledge of Kubernetes and Docker.
• Experience with monitoring and observability tools.
• Hands-on with monitoring and visualization platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, Victoria Metrics, or New Relic.
• Experience troubleshooting complex distributed systems in production environments.

• Design and implement metrics, logging, tracing, and telemetry solutions across cloud and edge components.
• Build monitoring pipelines, dashboards, and alerting frameworks for deployment health and operations.
• Define and maintain Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and reliability metrics.
• Create operational analytics for deployment performance, rollout progress, failure detection, and capacity planning.
• Integrate telemetry from cloud services, edge devices, deployment agents, and infrastructure into centralized monitoring.
• Develop automated detection and root-cause analysis with modern observability tooling.
• Develop self-service dashboards and reporting capabilities for engineering and operations teams.
• Drive observability standards, instrumentation practices, and monitoring strategies across the Retail Platform ecosystem.

This role requires you to be based in or near Kraków, spending about 60% of your week (3 days) working onsite at office locations or local sites, with the remaining work done remotely.
