Senior Java Backend Engineer

Our client is one of the world’s largest food retailers, operating thousands of stores across the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Europe, with products in various consumer categories and services including retail banking, insurance, and consultancy.

• 6+ years of experience as a Software Engineer within the JVM ecosystem
• Experience working in an Agile environment
• Excellent understanding of Java and Spring Boot frameworks, and the underlying abstraction layers
• Ability to translate business problems into technical strategies, designs, and implementation plans, and lead their execution
• Capability to work with minimal direction and collaborate across teams
• Strong engineering practices, including design, delivery, code quality, and development processes
• Ability to influence technical and business strategy with innovative approaches
• Strong communication skills to present ideas and drive alignment
• Ability to identify and address design and architectural deficiencies
• Track record of leading delivery of high-quality features
• Ability to identify and drive process improvements
• Experience contributing to requirements elaboration and clarification

• Design, develop, and implement robust backend services using Spring Boot and modern Java frameworks
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, scalable microservices
• Design and implement efficient data management solutions
• Leverage event-driven architecture and Kafka for real-time data processing
• Implement comprehensive testing strategies using JUnit 5, AssertJ, Mockito, and other industry-standard tools
• Work closely with the team to shape project direction, clarify ambiguous requirements, and develop effective solutions
• Proactively identify and apply appropriate design patterns to improve code quality, maintainability, and scalability
• Contribute to technical and architectural decisions and continuously improve backend services and development practices
