Senior Java Developer - AI/NLP Solutions

Charles River Development (CRD) is the FinTech division of State Street. CRD's cloud-based Front Office technology is part of the State Street Alpha Platform, the first front-to-back solution in the industry. The CRD Engineering organization is transforming the platform by moving from monolithic software toward modern cloud-based technologies, including Microsoft Azure, Kafka, and Snowflake. They are expanding the use of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing across their engineering solutions.

• B.S. or M.S. degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, or relevant technical field.
• At least five years of experience in software development lifecycle for enterprise Java applications.
• Strong knowledge of core Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, microservices, relational databases, and distributed systems including Kafka.
• Good understanding of machine learning and NLP fundamentals, including classification, model evaluation, tokenization, embeddings, semantic similarity, and information extraction.
• Familiarity with LLM and Transformer fundamentals, including prompting, context handling, structured outputs, retrieval-augmented generation, and integrating AI into backend applications.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills to collaborate across technical and business teams.

Nice to have:

• Experience with Kubernetes and cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure.
• Familiarity with vector search, embeddings, retrieval-augmented generation, and document-processing solutions.
• Experience with Python, ML or NLP libraries, and model deployment or monitoring practices.
• Understanding of responsible AI, data privacy, explainability, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
• Experience in regulated or data-sensitive environments.

• Analyze, design, develop, test, and maintain complex enterprise software using Java and related technologies.
• Design scalable backend services and evolve core application frameworks.
• Integrate machine learning models, Large Language Models, and AI services into enterprise applications.
• Collaborate with Product Managers, Business Analysts, architects, and engineers to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Contribute to architectural decisions related to AI integration, data flows, validation, security, observability, and operational support.
• Apply engineering best practices including automated testing, output validation, performance monitoring, auditability, and human oversight.
• Provide technical guidance during design discussions and code reviews.
• Troubleshoot complex technical issues in mission-critical client environments.
• Mentor junior engineers and support continuous improvement of engineering practices.
