Generative AI Engineer (Product Intelligence)

Tesco Technology operates the Product Intelligence Platform, a generative AI-driven system automating product categorisation, enrichment, and matching at scale. The platform processes over 1 million events weekly on an event-driven Kafka architecture and integrates multi-agent generative AI systems. The company is engaged in retail and e-commerce domains.

• Solid experience building production backend services in Python with modern frameworks like FastAPI, Django, or Flask.
• Practical hands-on experience with large language models (LLMs) and prompt engineering in production or near-production environments.
• Experience with embeddings and vector similarity databases, such as pgvector.
• Good understanding of event-driven architectures and Apache Kafka.
• Ability to work on ambiguous, research-driven problems, running feasibility studies and proofs of concept.
• Experience with cloud platforms, preferably Azure.
• Knowledge of software engineering best practices, including CI/CD, testing, and code review.
• Strong communication skills to navigate ambiguity and translate requirements into implementation plans.

Nice to have:

• Experience with LLM observability and evaluation tooling like Langfuse.
• Experience working with multi-agent systems.
• Familiarity with Java and Spring Boot.
• Experience with Kubernetes, specifically Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform.
• Knowledge of the retail or e-commerce domain.
• Understanding of data quality and governance principles.
• Experience mentoring or upskilling others in applied generative AI or involvement in hiring.

• Lead generative AI feasibility studies and proofs of concept for new product intelligence capabilities.
• Design and build generative AI solutions integrating large language models (Azure OpenAI GPT-4) via the GenAI Service facade.
• Build and maintain embedding-based similarity and scoring pipelines using PostgreSQL with pgvector.
• Contribute to LLM observability and evaluation practices, including regression testing and drift detection.
• Support Human-in-the-Loop tooling for data stewards' review and validation of generative AI outputs.
• Contribute to responsible generative AI governance activities, including audit support and structured release criteria.
• Build event-driven services in Python for high-volume data processing on Apache Kafka.
• Collaborate with product managers, data stewards, and engineers to translate ambiguous business problems into technical designs.
• Share generative AI knowledge with the wider team and contribute to upskilling.
• Optionally represent the team externally at conferences or in the tech community.
