Senior Backend Java Engineer

The Pangolins squad is the data protection engineering team within the Data Infrastructure organization. They build and operate systems that enable the company to meet privacy and compliance obligations at scale, covering GDPR rights such as Right to be Forgotten and Subject Access Requests, data retention enforcement, and access governance. The team supports the Digital Services Act (DSA) compliance infrastructure for very large online platforms, including data cataloging, researcher data access, law enforcement data access, and ML-based personal data annotation tooling. The team collaborates with Data Governance, Content Platform, Legal, and product teams.

• Solid backend engineering experience in Java on Google Cloud Platform.
• Hands-on experience with large-scale data infrastructure, ideally including BigQuery, GCS, and Kubernetes.
• Strong system design skills focused on reliability, maintainability, and auditability at scale, especially in compliance-critical contexts.
• Ability to work cross-functionally with Legal, Data Governance, Product, and engineering teams.
• Comfortable with ambiguity and fast-moving regulatory environments.
• Commitment to code quality, testing, and documentation for maintainable systems.
• Self-motivated with genuine enthusiasm for privacy and compliance infrastructure with real-world impact.

• Build the programmatic classification pipeline and governance data catalog behind DSA obligations, classifying data fields across tens of thousands of endpoints and provisioning them securely.
• Develop the governance taxonomy and data model for sensitive data categories, starting with Precise Location Data.
• Contribute to the EU e-Evidence system for cross-border law enforcement data access as new data categories and features come online.
• Partner with Data Governance, Content Platform, Legal, and product teams to deliver reliable, auditable, and scalable cross-organizational solutions.
• Champion engineering best practices, strong architectural design, and a culture of shared ownership and continuous improvement.
