Senior Software Engineer, Data Foundations

The Data Foundations team within Core Data focuses on building and evolving asynchronous data services that maintain data reliability and synchronization across Box's systems and data stores.

• 5+ years of software development experience focused on backend engineering, ideally with distributed systems and data-intensive applications.
• Proficiency in Java or Scala and experience building production backend services.
• Experience designing, building, and deploying scalable, highly available, and reliable distributed systems.
• Experience with asynchronous systems, data processing, messaging, or event-driven architectures.
• Strong understanding of data consistency, synchronization, and reliability in distributed systems.
• Experience owning production services, troubleshooting, improving performance, observability, and reliability.
• Ability to work with existing systems and identify improvements in architecture.
• Passion for solving complex technical problems and building large-scale data infrastructure.
• Ownership mindset and strong team interaction skills.
• BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Proficient in spoken and written English.

• Own and evolve asynchronous data services that support data synchronization across Box’s systems and data stores.
• Take ownership of existing services to improve reliability, scalability, observability, and overall architecture.
• Design and implement new services and improvements to support growing data volumes and platform requirements.
• Ensure data consistency and reliability across different data stores and downstream systems.
• Identify opportunities to simplify and consolidate existing services.
• Collaborate with engineers and teams across Core Data and Box to understand data requirements and dependencies.
• Participate in operation and continuous improvement of production services, including troubleshooting and performance enhancements.
• Contribute to the technical direction of the Data Foundations platform as the team evolves.
• Participate in on-call rotation to respond to and triage issues as they arise.
