Backend Engineer (Ruby), AI Engineering: Agent Foundations

GitLab is an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps used by over 50 million registered users including more than 50% of the Fortune 100. The Agent Foundations stage builds the platform for GitLab's agentic AI experiences, enabling AI agents to work across the whole software delivery lifecycle. The team is part of AI Engineering and works asynchronously across EMEA and AMER timezones.

• Experience building and maintaining production Ruby on Rails applications, including background jobs, APIs, and data models.
• Comfort working across the stack on a mature codebase; familiarity with Python backends and/or Vue frontends is a plus.
• Skill in designing or extending REST and/or GraphQL APIs focusing on scalability, maintainability, and backward compatibility.
• Enthusiasm for AI with hands-on experience using AI tools daily; experience designing and shipping AI-powered backend features or integrations is a plus.
• Proficiency with SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including efficient querying and data modeling.
• Experience diagnosing and fixing application performance bottlenecks.
• Clear written and verbal communication in a remote, asynchronous, cross-functional team.
• Openness to learning and applying skills from related technologies or fields.

• Develop, ship, and maintain features for the Duo Agent Platform in the GitLab monolith (Ruby) and AI Gateway (Python), ensuring security, testing, and performance.
• Collaborate with Product Management, UX, frontend, backend, and AI specialists to refine requirements and ship improvements iteratively.
• Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs with reliable, scalable, and clear contracts.
• Improve and extend automated testing using RSpec and other frameworks.
• Share standards, patterns, and learnings to advance responsible AI integration and evidence-driven engineering.
• Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations to troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and enhance observability and resiliency.
• Monitor the competitive landscape to maintain GitLab's agent platform leadership.
