Staff Software Engineer, Agent Retrieval Search Platform

Google Cloud's AI Research team focuses on AI challenges relevant to industries such as tech, healthcare, finance, and retail. The team develops next-generation technologies for Google Cloud, including the Agent Retrieval Search Platform which handles data ingestion to search results evaluation, targeting developers building adaptable application query serving journeys.

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of experience in software development.
• 5 years of experience building and developing infrastructure, distributed systems, networks, or with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.
• 5 years of experience testing and launching software products.
• 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience designing, tuning, or building vector search systems, including ANN approximate nearest neighbor indexing, vector embeddings management, hybrid lexical-vector searches, and co-located metadata storage.
• Experience architecting and deploying large-scale systems across any major Cloud platform.
• Expert-level knowledge of distributed systems including data partitioning, replication, consistency models, and trade-offs of stateful versus serverless components.
• Strong background in backend systems engineering covering high-throughput data access layers, custom API design, concurrency controls, and persistent storage engines like Spanner and Key-Value stores.

• Lead the technical execution and scoping of highly complex, ambiguous projects to systematically unblock core product limitations.
• Drive the physical design and implementation decisions to ensure backend system performance at scale.
• Build flexible solutions offering internal tooling capabilities to consuming products while managing massive query volumes.
• Contribute directly to critical code paths, author comprehensive technical designs, and perform code reviews.
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in cost-performance, query latency, and throughput to maintain low latency as datasets grow.
