Senior Backend Engineer (Go), Tenant Scale: Gitaly

GitLab is a platform for DevSecOps used by more than 50 million registered users and over 50% of the Fortune 100 companies to improve developer productivity and operational efficiency. The Gitaly team builds GitLab's Git data storage tier, focusing on reliable, secure, and fast access to Git repositories for GitLab.com, self-managed customers, and GitLab Dedicated.

• Significant professional experience building, debugging, and optimizing distributed or highly available software systems in large-scale production environments.
• Experience managing complex projects end to end, including technical design, execution, rollout, and operational support.
• Strong systems design skills with understanding of performance, failure modes, consistency, concurrency, capacity, and observability.
• Proven ability to influence technical decisions and collaborate effectively with stakeholders.
• Experience mentoring engineers and enhancing team practices, code quality, testing, and documentation.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to explain complex technical concepts.
• Professional experience with Go or another backend or systems programming language.
• Experience operating production systems, incident response, and implementing durable improvements.
• Experience with Ruby, Git internals, gRPC, or Git server infrastructure is highly desirable.

• Own technical initiatives from problem definition through implementation, rollout, and operational follow-through.
• Align stakeholders, communicate progress, identify risks, and drive project execution with minimal guidance.
• Lead technical design for distributed storage, Git repository management, performance, reliability, and scalability.
• Collaborate with multiple teams across GitLab to deliver cross-functional outcomes.
• Mentor engineers, improve practices, and conduct design and code reviews.
• Take operational ownership including incident response, capacity and performance analysis, and customer escalations.
• Identify and implement improvements beyond individual changes through automation and upstream contributions.
• Respond to user emergencies, platform alerts, support requests, and participate in on-call duties.
