People Systems Engineer

The People Technology team builds systems that enable GitLab to scale as a global, all-remote company by improving reliability, usability, and intelligence across platforms that power the People organization.

• Hands-on experience building automations or integrations, preferably with human resources or business systems.
• Experience writing and maintaining code in Ruby or comparable scripting languages such as Python or JavaScript; willingness to learn Ruby if needed.
• Hands-on experience with Workato or similar integration platform as a service (iPaaS) in production.
• Experience with APIs and web services including REST and SOAP.
• Proficiency with Git for version control and code review.
• AI-forward mindset: use AI tools daily to automate tasks and improve processes.
• Ability to work independently, solve problems, collaborate openly, and protect confidential information.
• Additional beneficial experience includes Workday integrations (WWS, Reporting as a Service, Workday Studio), Slack apps or bots, CI/CD pipelines, Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, Docker, Kubernetes, building with LLMs, AI agents or MCP frameworks, SOX ITGC controls, Greenhouse, Serval, Google Workspace, or experience in an all-remote and asynchronous work environment.

• Build, test, and maintain People system automations and integrations across Workato, Google Cloud Platform, Claude, Workday, Greenhouse, and GitLab.
• Develop integrations using Workday Web Services (WWS), Slack’s API and Bot SDK.
• Write clean, readable automation code in Ruby or a comparable scripting language with documentation and peer reviews.
• Monitor integration health, troubleshoot failures, and fix root causes to maintain reliable automations.
• Ship changes safely through GitLab CI/CD pipelines, adhering to testing and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) IT general controls (ITGC) standards.
• Use AI tools, large language models (LLMs), and Model Context Protocol (MCP) frameworks like Claude daily to accelerate development and prototype AI agents.
• Partner with People Technology Analysts, Information Security, IT, and AI Engineering to ensure security and standards.
• Raise standards for automation architecture, documentation, and maintenance by collaborating with the Lead People Systems Engineer.
