Senior Backend Software Engineer

The Gateway Related Projects team focuses on designing, developing, and implementing payment solutions to ensure stable and consistent payment processing. The goal is to create successful products and establish a reputation as a dependable partner for clients in the payment domain.

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with deep Python expertise (FastAPI and AsyncIO preferred)
• Experience with Perl production code and willingness to work within legacy code
• Proven experience building and scaling distributed microservices architectures and high-throughput systems
• Deep understanding of integrating third-party APIs including webhooks, callbacks, idempotency, and retry policies
• Strong experience with Docker and containerization
• Solid grasp of AWS cloud infrastructure including Lambda, SQS, SNS, and cloud networking
• Familiarity with event-driven architecture and messaging systems such as Kafka and RabbitMQ
• Strong engineering mindset valuing clean, intentional code over AI-generated snippets
• Experience owning features from design to production and mentoring engineers
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills

• Support and extend the existing Perl-based payment gateway
• Design and build high-performance microservices in Python
• Architect and implement scalable, distributed Python services to replace legacy components
• Integrate and manage complex third-party APIs and external payment services
• Lead code reviews and drive engineering best practices
• Identify system bottlenecks to improve performance and scalability
• Collaborate with DevOps to improve CI/CD pipelines using GitLab
• Architect solutions using AWS services (Lambda, ECS, SQS/SNS)
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues in distributed systems
• Maintain a "zero-downtime" mentality for merchants
• Bring a product mindset to understand business logic and user impact
