Engineering Manager - Backend (Transcend)

Transcend Retail Solutions, a subsidiary of Tesco, offers technology powering Tesco’s $8bn online grocery business, tailored for global retail partners. It operates as a “startup within an enterprise," combining agility with backing from a global retail leader.

• Proven experience managing software engineering teams (around 8 people)
• 6+ years of hands-on software development experience
• Strong understanding of Agile methodologies (Scrum or Kanban)
• Fluent English with excellent communication skills
• Experience in high-scale environments (e.g., e-commerce, millions of API calls)
• Practical experience with cloud platforms (Azure or similar)
• Strong system design and architecture skills
• Track record of owning projects end-to-end and providing technical leadership
• Experience mentoring and developing engineers
• Proactive, value-driven mindset with strong problem-solving abilities
• Ability to engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Comfortable working directly with customers and external partners

Nice to have:

• Experience with the tech stack: Java 21+, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, Couchbase, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, Docker, Azure, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, SonarQube, Selenium, Prometheus, Grafana, Git + GitHub

• Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions
• Design secure, performant, and maintainable system architectures and APIs
• Guide the team in writing clean, efficient, and testable code
• Oversee testing and quality assurance to ensure reliability and performance
• Manage deployments, monitor system health, and optimize performance
• Provide production support and participate in on-call rotations
• Conduct regular 1:1s, coach team members, and support career development
• Build high-performing teams delivering value within tight timeframes
• Represent your team in cross-functional technical discussions
• Define and prioritize features for services owned by your team
• Continuously improve engineering practices and team processes
• Act as a bridge between engineering and external stakeholders, ensuring alignment with customer expectations and business goals

This role requires residence in or near Kraków, Poland with hybrid work (60% on-site presence at office/local sites) and the rest remote.
