Senior Embedded/Firmware Engineer (freelance)

intent has been designing and co-creating connected devices since 2008, specializing in wearables, smart audio, and health-tech hardware with clients like Oura and BOSE. The company is 60+ people, fully remote, and AI-native, focusing on firmware development for Bluetooth Low Energy stacks, power budgets, sensor pipelines, and OTA updates.

• Minimum 4 years of professional firmware development experience
• Strong C/C++ skills for embedded systems
• Hands-on experience with ESP32, including ESP-IDF and ESP-ADF
• Experience with STM32 in production projects
• Solid knowledge of Bluetooth, including BLE and Bluetooth Mesh across stack layers
• Fluency with toolchains including CMake, GCC, and Python-based tooling
• Familiarity with IoT protocols like MQTT and WebSockets
• Understanding of connected device landscapes: IoT, home automation, wearables, automotive
• English proficiency at B2+ level, both written and spoken
• Self-reliance, ownership mentality, and clear communication

Nice to have:

• Rapid hardware prototyping on Arduino, Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone, Nucleo platforms
• Working knowledge of LoRa, Zigbee, Thread, Wi-Fi, and other networking standards
• Experience with fleet deployment and management using AWS IoT Core, GCP Cloud IoT, or Azure IoT
• Cryptography in embedded systems
• Experience with audio encoding, decoding, and mixers
• Machine learning on embedded targets
• Experience with Rust in firmware
• Familiarity with embedded operating systems like FreeRTOS, Zephyr
• Genuine curiosity about device behavior beyond software

• Plan, develop, and ship firmware for connected devices including wearables, audio, and health-tech hardware
• Gather and analyze requirements from clients and translate them into functional firmware on real silicon
• Consult clients and internal teams on stacks, tools, and trade-offs
• Collaborate closely with mobile, backend, and QA teams to ensure device and companion app compatibility over BLE
• Test firmware releases and write documentation
• Estimate work and flag risks to avoid blockers
• Promote better practices such as code reviews, design patterns, and knowledge sharing
• Use AI tools as part of the daily workflow
