Staff Software Engineer (Scala), Krakow

Sprout Social is a company processing tens of billions of requests and social messages daily, delivering over 1,000 production deployments every month. The engineering team collaborates across front-end, back-end, and site reliability engineering, focusing on building scalable software products on a "tech-giant" scale with smaller supportive teams. The role is based in Kraków, with occasional office work.

• 7+ years experience developing and supporting software in production environments.
• 5+ years programming experience in object-oriented languages such as Scala and/or other JVM languages.
• 5+ years experience with functional programming paradigms and ecosystems.
• 3+ years leading engineering projects, including design and implementation of distributed systems and delivering reliable services.
• Professional English proficiency (C1 level) in verbal and written communication.
• Located in or near Kraków with occasional availability to work from the office.

Preferred qualifications:

• 5+ years experience developing and supporting scalable, distributed backend services.
• 3 years experience working with SQL databases.
• Professional Polish proficiency in verbal and written communication.

• Ensure service excellence and maintain robust, scalable technical foundations using technologies such as Scala, MySQL, Clickhouse, Redis, Kafka, NSQ, AWS, Python, and Java.
• Lead the team through complex product and technical roadmaps to achieve consistent successful outcomes.
• Improve processes, systems, and tools to deliver quality products and champion technical initiatives.
• Build processes to proactively identify and address technical issues or escalate them for prioritization.
• Provide technical mentoring across the team through pairing, documentation, and workshops.

Growth milestones:

Within 1 month:

• Complete new hire training, learn current objectives, technical vision, and deploy production changes.
• Collaborate regularly with cross-functional teams.

Within 3 months:

• Operate as technical owner of the access domain, lead feature delivery, and foster positive team culture.

Within 6 months:

• Design and maintain access platform solutions at internet scale, improve monitoring and alerting.
• Identify and resolve technical debt and performance bottlenecks.

Within 12 months:

• Become go-to expert for team systems, lead cross-organizational projects, and contribute to technical presentations.
