Big Data Engineer (Scala)

The company serves global organizations and is headquartered in Redwood City, CA, with offices worldwide. The role is within the newly formed Data Foundations team of Core Data, responsible for large-scale asynchronous data services supporting Box's data infrastructure.

• Familiarity with Scala/Java, MySQL, Pub/Sub, BigQuery.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Mathematics or related field.
• Minimum 3 years professional software development experience.
• Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, and code design principles.
• Strong grasp of high-scale distributed systems.
• Passionate about database scale and performance challenges.
• Strong sense of ownership, persistence, drive, and communication skills.

Methodology and tools:

• Agile management - Scrum.
• Issue tracking with Jira.
• Knowledge repository and code reviews via GitHubEnterprise.
• Version control system - GIT.

• Own and evolve asynchronous data services for data synchronization across Box's systems and data stores.
• Improve reliability, scalability, observability, and architecture of existing services.
• Design and implement new services to support growing data volumes and evolving platform needs.
• Ensure data consistency and reliability across different data stores and downstream systems.
• Identify opportunities to simplify and consolidate services to improve the data platform.
• Collaborate with engineers and teams across Core Data and Box on data requirements and challenges.
• Participate in production service operation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.
• Contribute to the technical direction of the Data Foundations platform.
• Participate in on-call rotation to respond to and triage production issues.
