Backend Expert (node.js)

Intent is a company designing and co-creating connected devices since 2008, including wearables, smart audio, and health-tech hardware for clients such as Oura and BOSE. The company has over 60 employees, operates fully remotely, and integrates AI into daily work processes. Their backend serves as the cloud infrastructure connecting physical devices, firmware, and data pipelines.

• 7+ years of backend development experience with leadership in technical direction
• Strong Node.js skills in production systems at scale
• Deep, hands-on AWS expertise including EKS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Timestream, S3
• Experience with Kubernetes (EKS), Docker, and Terraform for infrastructure building and maintenance
• Solid understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and data pipelines
• Experience with MQTT or similar IoT messaging protocols
• Experience designing CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins
• English language proficiency at B2+ level (written and spoken)
• Ability to translate business needs into technical decisions and communicate with non-technical stakeholders
• Openness to defend technical opinions and adapt them based on evidence

Nice to have:

• Previous IoT or connected device project experience, especially with telemetry at scale
• Production experience with Golang
• Experience with observability stacks including tracing, metrics, and structured logging
• Security mindset for cloud-connected devices including secrets management, mTLS, and OTA updates
• Curiosity about device-side technology beyond the cloud

• Own and evolve backend architecture for IoT projects, including data ingestion pipelines, API design, and infrastructure decisions
• Make and defend technical trade-off decisions to the team and clients
• Design and maintain cloud infrastructure on AWS (EKS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Timestream, S3) with production-grade reliability
• Lead technical discussions such as RFCs, architecture reviews, and post-mortems
• Mentor other backend engineers to improve code quality and set patterns
• Collaborate with firmware engineers, mobile developers, QA, PMs, and clients
• Utilize AI tools as part of the daily workflow
• Challenge product and technical assumptions when necessary
