Infrastructure Engineer

QED is a tech company focused on public health and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa. They build digital infrastructure and AI for aid and scientific inquiry, including surveillance of HIV and malaria, and nutrient analysis of crops and soils, operating at national scale in several African countries. Their funding comes from philanthropic and governmental organizations such as the Global Fund, Gates Foundation, CDC, and USAID.

• Over 4 years of experience
• Automation and declarative oriented mindset
• Broad knowledge including Linux internals, networking, databases, hardware performance, containers, performance tuning, and security
• Strong background in software engineering, version control, writing readable code and tests, robust design, and basic data structures and algorithms
• Working proficiency in English (≥C1) in speaking, reading, and typing
• Logical reasoning and clear oral and written communication
• Willingness to work with people from other cultures
• Emotional resilience and social intelligence
• Genuine care about the work
• Optimism at least sometimes

Nice to have:

• Experience with NixOS, Kubernetes, Terraform
• Experience with bare metal hardware selection and on-site setup
• Ethical hacking experience
• Experience with programming and/or math competitions

• Domain knowledge or interest in sustainable development goals, public health, agriculture, and assisting developing countries

• Working with declarative tooling (NixOS, k3s, terraform) mostly on bare metal servers with some cloud usage
• Planning infrastructure layout, selecting components, testing, and deploying them
• Designing reusable modules to ease deployment across many environments
• Improving developer tooling
• Maintaining monitoring and alerting systems
• Responding to downtimes with optional pager duty
• Planning and building bare metal infrastructure for deployment in low to middle income countries
• Optional travel to set up hardware in local data centers and learn about problems

Requires full-time physical presence in Warsaw, Poland with hybrid remote and in-person work, expecting at least 2-3 days per week in the office.
