Staff Engineer PHP

Cyber_Folks, a brand of Shoper, is one of the largest e-commerce platforms in Poland.

• Experience leading complex backend initiatives across multiple teams and translating ambiguous business needs into staged architectural decisions and execution plans.
• Practical advanced knowledge of PHP and the Zend and Symfony frameworks, with experience in maintaining and developing large backend applications.
• Experience in shaping architecture and modernizing monolithic applications developed by multiple teams in a single repository — defining domain boundaries, contracts, module ownership, limiting dependencies, and extracting selected areas into independently deployable services.
• Practice in legacy system modernization, staged refactoring, migration, and risk management of changes.
• Ability to profile applications and databases, diagnose bottlenecks, and validate optimization results with measurements; good knowledge of MySQL and Elasticsearch.
• Strong knowledge in API, distributed services, including compatibility, idempotency, retries, and failure handling.
• Experience building secure, observable, and reliable systems and practical knowledge of CI/CD processes and tools such as GoCD and GitHub Actions.
• Advanced practice in using AI assistants and agents and experience implementing AI tools or automation used across teams, including evaluation of their impact on speed, quality, safety, and cost.
• Ability to influence without formal authority — leading technical decisions, building consensus, communicating compromises, and developing other engineers.

Nice to have:

• Knowledge of Event Storming — Big Picture, Process Modelling, and Software Design, and experience facilitating such workshops.
• Experience evaluating AI tools and models regarding quality, security, privacy, costs, and integration possibilities.
• Experience creating internal AI agents, integrations, or automation supporting work with code, tests, documentation, or incidents.
• Production experience with at least one additional backend language such as Python, Java, Kotlin, or Go.

• Conduct architecture, code, data, performance, security, and operational risk audits and develop plans to reduce technical debt.
• Define architecture growth direction considering scalability, reliability, security, and maintenance costs.
• Actively participate in critical business projects by designing architecture and implementing, reviewing, and delivering backend PHP changes.
• Lead cross-team architectural decisions and RFC processes assessing business value, costs, risks, and trade-offs.
• Establish standards for code quality, testing, security, observability, documentation, and technical reviews.
• Profile applications, diagnose production and performance issues, and remove bottlenecks in code, MySQL, Elasticsearch, and service communication.
• Manage evolutionary modularization of the monolith developed across teams in a single repository by defining domain boundaries, module ownership, dependency rules, and selectively extracting justified areas into separate services.
• Elevate the technical level of the organization through code reviews, mentoring, documentation, reference patterns, and knowledge sharing.
• Develop and implement shared principles for AI usage in engineering — defining proper applications and requirements for context, verification, testing, code reviews, and security of generated changes.
• Identify repetitive or costly work steps and create and pilot AI tools, agents, and automation; measure their impact on delivery time, quality, and team workload before broader adoption.
