Senior Backend Engineer (Ruby), Production Engineering:Tenant Controls

GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, trusted by more than 50 million registered users and over 50% of the Fortune 100. The role is within the Tenant Controls team in Production Engineering, responsible for maintaining application-level rate limiting on GitLab.com to define, count, and observe every application rate limit to enable configuration and monitoring without deployment.

• Strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning in complex product or service environments.
• Proficiency in modern backend languages and systems programming with the ability to learn and adapt.
• Experience designing or evolving modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures.
• Ability to lead through influence, technical judgment, and clear asynchronous written communication.
• Experience building or operating agentic AI systems in production, including reliability strategies beyond prompt engineering.

Nice to have:

• Experience with high-throughput distributed systems, concurrency, or profiling.
• Experience with containerized production operations such as Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of database performance optimizations in PostgreSQL and ClickHouse, schema evolution, or partitioning.
• Experience with large-scale modular monoliths or event-driven systems.
• Public technical communication, open source maintenance, or developer-focused software as a service (SaaS) experience.

• Design and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance, selecting appropriate architectural approaches.
• Influence team objectives, technical direction, and long-term goals, collaborating with product managers and designers.
• Define backend standards for style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operational readiness, advocating for quality, security, availability, and performance.
• Mentor associate and intermediate engineers, remove technical blockers, and improve delivery practices through code and design reviews.
• Diagnose and prevent performance and reliability issues at scale, participate in incident response, and act as technical owner when appropriate.
• Experiment with and integrate agentic AI into production engineering workflows, evaluate its effectiveness, and coach others on responsible use and judgment.
