Database Engineer, hybrid, Assistant Vice President

Charles River Development (CRD) is the FinTech division of State Street, providing cloud-based Front Office technology that forms the foundation of the State Street Alpha® Platform, a front-to-back industry solution. The CRD Engineering organization is focused on moving from monolithic software to next generation cloud-based technologies including Microsoft Azure, Kafka, and Snowflake. • B.S. degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or other technical course required; MS degree strongly preferred
• 5 to 7+ years professional software engineering experience with enterprise applications backed by RDBMS databases or Snowflake
• Extensive hands-on experience as a database developer with RDBMS and distributed data platforms
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot database-related issues
• Proficiency in SQL performance tuning in MS SQL Server, Oracle, or Snowflake
• Proven track record delivering high performance, production-quality software on schedule
• Ability to work independently, multitask, and adapt to changes
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex technical concepts
• Minimum 5 years experience with Agile development methodology

Nice to have:

• Expert experience with hardware sizing, operating systems, scripting, and database technologies
• Experience with NoSQL databases
• Experience with cloud database services such as Azure SQL Database or AWS RDS
• Experience developing applications for financial markets including Fixed Income, Trading, FX, Risk, Portfolio/Wealth Management, Market Data, and FIX

Database Design and Architecture:

• Design and implement scalable, performant, and highly available distributed database solutions
• Collaborate with peers across scrum teams to design databases conforming to best practices and business requirements
• Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of database design, data models, configurations, and processes

Database Development and optimization:

• Write complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and scripts to support application development
• Optimize performance through indexing, SQL query optimization, and database tuning techniques
• Monitor database performance metrics, analyze bottlenecks, and recommend solutions
• Collaborate with engineering teams on performance test strategy and develop toolsets for synthetic datasets
• Implement and manage database security including access controls, encryption, and auditing

Database Administration:

• Collaborate with production DBA team to troubleshoot and resolve production issues promptly
• Monitor and maintain database health to ensure data integrity, availability, and disaster recovery
• Perform database installation, configuration, and upgrades in lower environments

Collaboration and Leadership:

• Provide thought leadership on database technologies and data modeling
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of database systems
• Provide technical mentorship to junior database engineers

This role requires a hybrid work model with at least 3 days in the office per week. Salary is subject to factors including location and individual qualifications.
