Senior Software Engineer, Context Layer

Starburst is developing the Enterprise Context Layer, a product that turns scattered data into governed, versioned Data Products with business definitions, access policy, and lineage. This allows BI tools, applications, and AI agents to work from the same trusted data.

• Extensive software development experience with Java.
• Versatility and willingness to work across the full stack (frontend, tooling, infrastructure) when required.
• Experience designing, building, and operating distributed backend services in production.
• Experience designing and operating REST APIs.
• Experience modeling and serving graph-structured or richly-relational data.
• Experience integrating LLMs into backend systems, including structured extraction, prompt-based enrichment, or evaluation.
• Ability to work in ambiguous, fast-evolving problem spaces where architecture is still being defined.
• Hands-on experience using agentic coding tools with appropriate testing, review, and verification.
• Demonstrated experience with software engineering best practices.

Nice to have:

• Experience with data catalogs, semantic layers, or metadata/governance systems (e.g., dbt, Collibra).
• Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% for onboarding, offsites, customer engagements, and company events.

• Design, build, and operate backend services that collect and reconcile business context into governed Context Studio.
• Build and evolve certification and versioning workflows for trusted metrics and data definitions.
• Contribute to APIs and MCP-based integrations enabling AI agents and BI tools to query certified context.
• Own reliability and data consistency for services merging information from multiple sources.
• Partner with product teams to define both what gets built and how, including frontend, tooling, or full-stack tasks to unblock features.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with platform teams building AI-powered features.
• Provide timely and considerate reviews of peers' pull requests and design proposals.

The role requires up to 25% in-person travel for onboarding, offsites, customer engagements, and company events. The data administrator is Starburst Data Polska sp. z o.o. based in Warszawa.
